There is a famous ghost story surrounding the former station at Maco on the abandoned section of former SCL/ACL rail between Malmo and Whiteville, NC.  Some accounts say that the light has been seen since the rails were removed in 1977, others say the light has disappeared.  Read about the legend using the links below.  See pictures below showing the former ROW as it looks now in Maco, NC.

This is the view now in Maco looking W along the abandoned ROW at NC 87.  The Maco station was apparently close to this location, and the area of the "Maco Light" was a little bit further west.  (March 2001)
Looking the other direction (E) along NC 87 at Maco, NC.  Wilmington is another 15 - 20 miles away across the Cape Fear River.  This section of railroad was abandoned in 1977.  It is still apparent where the pavement was cut to remove the rails.
