Ghost Railroads of Indiana by Elmer G. Sulzer - This and the other 2 books in this classic series have been reprinted.  You may want to grab a copy while they still are available.  I hope to one day put together similar compilations for other states.

SPV's Railroad Atlases - These atlases show existing and abandoned railroad lines. 

Rails to Trails Conservancy - This group is dedicated to preserving abandoned rail lines for use as recreational trails.

South Carolina Rail-Trails  -  This web site has a complete list of SC railroad lines abandoned since 1970 -- over 763 miles in all.

West Virginia Rails-to-Trails Council  -  Excellent web site of a very active organization.

Smokey Mountain Railroad  -  Great site about this abandoned Tennessee railroad.
